Description

This 1989 Ferrari Mondial T has just under 37k miles and is an unmodified US-market example finished in Rosso Corsa over tan leather. The T was the most powerful and technically sophisticated version of Ferrariâ??s mid-engined 2+2, and just 43 of the 858 T coupes produced are said to have come to North America.Pininfarina-styled sheet metal wears clean Rosso Corsa paint that exhibits a smooth gloss throughout and gives paint meter readings from 4.0-9.5 mils as detailed in the gallery below. Styling revisions for the T included more muscular wheel arches, here covering largely unmarked factory 16â?³ convex 5-spokes wearing Michelin Pilot Sport rubber from 2002. Fiberglass wraparound bumper covers look clean and uncracked but could benefit from slight realignment. Recent repairs alleviated scuffs on the low-hanging black chin spoiler.Other trim presents well including trademark full-width hood louvers along with downsized side openings which route air to the engine intake and oil cooler. Retractable headlight panels contain rectangular lamps for the T rather than the twin round versions of previous cars, and are supplemented with side markers for North America. US-bound cars were also equipped with power sunroofs, and this one was repaired in early 2016 with replacement guide blocks, drive cable, and gear as detailed in the accompanying invoice.Tan Connolly leather upholstery is impressively preserved throughout the interior, with apparent seat wear limited to light bolster cracking and wrinkling on the driver-side. Black vinyl surfaces appear free of splits and show only isolated areas of mild distortion. Carpeting and floor mats are presentable with some heel wear on the driverâ??s item. The thick factory three-spoke steering wheel shows evidence of light use along with the handbrake lever and other controls.Factory instrumentation remains clear and vivid, including an odometer reading just under 37k miles. Plastics and switchgear look clean aside from marking across the steering column clamshell trim. Power windows are equipped, and all switches, lights, mirrors, and electronic components are said to function properly. The heater is said to work effectively along with the factory air conditioning system, which received new fittings and was converted to R134a refrigerant during the 2015 service.A full-sized spare tire is housed in the clean front compartment along with fluid reservoirs and a nose-mounted radiator with twin fans. The cooling system was flushed during the 2015 service.Power is from a mid-mounted 3.4 liter quad cam V8 mounted longitudinally in the T rather than transversely as in earlier Mondials. With a Bosch Motronic computer for each bank of the engine and a 7,500 rpm redline, this iteration of the 90-degree V8 carried factory ratings of 300 horsepower and 238 lb. ft. of torque. The engine bay looks stock and well detailed with little grime, and flaking finishes are visible only on the underside of the lid above.A major service was performed in December 2015 by North Coast Exotics of Cleveland and included replacement of timing and drive belts, tensioner pulleys, cam seals, spark plugs, and filters, as well as verification of valve clearances. The 5-speed gearbox remained transverse to form the T shape that lent the model its name and allowed for a lower center of gravity and improved weight distribution. Dry-sump lubrication was also featured as opposed to the conventional wet sump on earlier Mondials. The space-frame chassis featured removable subframes including one holding the entire drivetrain and rear suspension. Standard items on the T included anti-lock brakes and Ferrariâ??s first production use of power-assisted steering, both of which received fresh fluids during the service. Fasteners show zinc finishes and factory paint markings on three-position electronically controlled suspension.Sheet metal pans include typical scuffs underneath along with road-damaged edges detailed in the gallery. Isolated corrosion appears superficial and is concentrated mostly on a damaged chassis brace up front. Engine and gearbox oil were replaced during the service, and fluid leakage appears negligible.
