Description
This 1973 BMW 2002tii is a late model roundie that was delivered new to the BMW motor pool in July 1973 and remained in Europe for several years thereafter. The car then spent time in Colorado and was brought to Virginia in 2011 by its previous owner, who spent the next five years on a bare-metal color change and refurbishment. Work included a top-end rebuild for the original 2.0L fuel-injected four, an interior color change, suspension and brake overhauls, and more as detailed below. Records are available from 2011 through the sellerâ??s yearlong ownership, during which the 4-speed manual transmission was replaced among other finishing touches. Originally Agave Green, sheet metal received a full bare-metal color change to Inka orange using Sherwin Williams base and clear coat. Photos of the process are provided in the gallery below. The finish is photographed in bright sun and shade, and small imperfections are shown up close along with brightwork and other trim.New BMW 13â??â?? alloy wheels have been fitted, and fresh Kumho rubber is mounted throughout, including on the stamped steel spare. Lighting upgrades include Hella Super H4 headlights, rewired taillights, and an LED third brake light. New chrome beltline trim was installed, and the seller describes completion of many fit and finish tasks over the past year. A replacement front clip with non-tii snorkel and early bumper holes is believed by the seller to date from a repair during the carâ??s time in Europe.A black interior has replaced the original Saddle and is detailed below along with the carpets, headliner, and dash. The car shows 37k miles on a replacement gauge cluster, with just under 2,000 added during the sellerâ??s ownership. Actual mileage is unknown. The fuel gauge is said to indicate half a tank when full, and the seller notes that the interior would benefit from additional sound deadening and installation of the included rear seatbelts. A period AM/FM radio is retained along with the tii-specfic clock mounted on the dash. The original 2.0L M10 four received a cylinder head rebuild by Top End Performance in California that included new intake valves, guides, seals, rockers, shafts, and a three-angle valve job. The stock camshaft is retained. The seller has tuned the Kugelfischer injection and cleaned the fuel system as well as adding a new Ireland Engineering distributor with electronic ignition. A photo of the matching-number engine stamping can be viewed in the gallery.A cold-start video is viewable above, and a hot-start video can be seen here. A fresh set of NGK spark plugs have been installed along with a new heater valve and thermostat. The seller quotes engine compression numbers of 155-160 psi across all four cylinders.Shifting is via a 4-speed manual transmission that was installed during the sellerâ??s ownership, with its operation demonstrated in the video above. Matching VINs on the chassis ID plate, engine, and body are shown in the photos below.Underbody photos show the general condition of the drivetrain, suspension, and black-painted floors. Suspension work included rebuilt subframes, new Bilstein HD shocks, and fresh bushings throughout. A brake system overhaul included stainless hoses as well as new pads and rotors. The brake booster and calipers were rebuilt and new wheel bearings were installed by the seller.
