Description

This 1973 BMW 2002 has been with the seller for 11 years and is tastefully modified with a combination of BMW parts and high quality aftermarket items. The engine block is an S14 from an E30 M3, which is paired to a ported and polished E12 cylinder head with individual throttle bodies. This setup yields 131 horsepower at the rear wheels according to the included dyno sheet. Other performance modifications include an E21 5-speed manual, 3.91 rear end with LSD, MegaSquirt EFI, adjustable Koni shocks, and uprated brakes all around. This 2002 was repainted in 2009 and benefits from a nicely retrimmed interior with Recaro seats. When the car was repainted seven years ago, the seller had the US-Spec sidemarker holes and lower door trim holes filled. The paintwork was performed by Andy Shank, and included the full exterior, door jambs, engine bay, and trunk. DuPont Chromabase paint was applied in the original Sahara color, and the window, door, and trunk seals were replaced when the work was complete. The bumpers are from a pre-1972 2002, and feature Euro-market bumper-mounted license plate lights. They were refinished by Aardvark, and much of the other chrome and aluminum trim was replaced at the time of repaint. The rear bumper has a slight defect where it was nudged by another driver car. The dent has been popped out, but the finish is affected.Front turn signals are Italian-market style with half amber and half clear lenses. The wheels are 14â?³ BMW steel items, and the seller has fitted faux Alpina center cap stickers. Tires are 195 section Falken Azenis, and the seller describes the ride as stiff but not punishing. Some small defects are present in the paintwork, which are detailed in the photo gallery below. The carpet is a custom German square weave kit with color-coordinated piping. The dash has a stitched vinyl cover from Only02, and a Momo Prototipo steering wheel is fitted. The door panels have been cut for speakers and the chrome-look trim on the door panels is wearing off.All gauges work, though the speedometer reads slightly fast because of the altered rear-end gearing. 11,500 miles are shown, and the odometer has rolled over at least once. The seller notes 78k miles were shown when the car was purchased. The glovebox has been re-flocked and the heater and pedal boxes have both been rebuilt. The rear window defroster is not working. The front seats are Recaros from an E21 3-Series and the rear seat is stock. Both have been reupholstered in tan vinyl. The headliner was replaced after the car was painted in 2009.Mechanical modifications are extensive, and the setup has a clean motorsports look to it. The S14 bottom end was modified only slightly to accept the E12 head, as the S14 is based on the M10 from the 2002. Engine and machining work was done by Terry Tinney of Tinney Performance Motors. Engine modifications include:2.3L BMW S14 block from an E30 M3S14 crank, rods, and crank pulley with custom Ross pistonsPorted and polished E12 cylinder head with 292 camshaft45mm TWM individual throttle bodies with TWM fuel railLee Vuongâ??s â??Massiveâ? Carbon airbox with custom adapter plateCustom vacuum log to provide reliable signal to ECUMegaSquirt programmable EFI (running since 2007, mounted below passengerâ??s seat)Distributorless IgnitionVAC trigger wheelFlow tested E30 M3 injectors, E30 318is fuel pumpIreland Engineering Stainless Steel HeaderMagnaflow Resonator with stainless steel exhaust piping throughoutBMW E21 5-Speed transmissionBMW 3.91 rear end with limited slip differentialLighter weight S14 starter motor, uprated alternatorIreland Engineering Motor MountsNew timing and oil pump drive chains at time of rebuildIreland Engineering oil pan baffleThis engine is good for a dyno-verified 131 horsepower at the wheels. Given 15% drivetrain losses this equates to around 155 horsepower at the crank.Koni adjustable shocks have been fitted all around with a Ground Control coilover kit at the front and Ireland Engineering Stage II springs at the rear. Ground Control camber/caster plates have been installed at the top of the front struts, while the chassis has been stiffened with an Ireland Engineering front strut brace and TEP rear shock tower brace with integrated battery tray. Suspension Techniques sway bars round out the suspension modifications.Uprated Girling brakes are fitted at the front, and larger E21 drums at the rear. A 2002 tii master cylinder and brake booster were also added. Hawk HPS brake pads are fitted, and stainless steel brake lines have been installed all around.
