1971 Alfa Romeo GTV

This 1971 Alfa Romeo GTV is a California car that benefits from a recent refresh of its 1750cc inline-four, SPICA fuel injection system, suspension, brakes, and interior. Repainted in its original Alfa Red in the mid 1990s just before the project stalled, the car was reportedly stored indoors thereafter at Giorgio Motors in San Rafael, California. Cromodora turbine alloys show some curb rash and wear new General rubber all around. The car presents well in person as demonstrated in this brief walk-around video, exhibiting crisp character lines and visible rocker seams. A number of small indentations have been fixed via paintless dent removal. Brightwork wears a deep shine throughout, including on the largely straight bumpers and the seven-bar heart sitting over the expanded mesh grille. Badging appears complete and is predominantly clear, though both C-pillar cloverleafs and Bertone coachwork badging are discolored. Lights and lenses appear free of cracks, and side markers were left intact during the cosmetic overhaul. Original glass looks clear and weather seals are new around both front and rear windshields. A new dash and front seat covers from Classic Alfa have been fitted within the last year. Bucket seats show some looseness and unstitched backrest lines, while the contoured rear seats appear to be in good condition. Simple door panels have little in the way of damage or distortion, while a new headliner installed in the mid 1990s still fits well with no apparent damage. Wood paneling and headrest supports show well, while metallic trim is mostly bright including on stainless sill trim and the hoop-style seatbelt receiver. A new wiper switch has replaced the broken original and the empty holes in the center console have since been filled with new speakers, though no stereo is present. Other switchgear appears intact, though the large factory steering wheel shows its age with cracked spoke covers and a faded emblem. Recently treated to a new carpet kit and trim, the trunk presents cleanly underneath with mild surface corrosion and occasional applications of rust-inhibiting paint. A solid-looking spare tire well houses an older Michelin on a stamped wheel. The factory jack remains present, and a fresh fuel tank has been sourced from Classic Alfa and fitted with a new sender. The 1750cc twin cam inline-four is original as confirmed by a number stamp matching that recorded in the included original service manual. The engine was rebuilt in 2016 by Star Machine of Emeryville, California using parts sourced from Norman Racing Group in Berkeley. New pistons, liners, bearings, and timing chains were installed, while connecting rods were reconditioned and the crank was polished. A valve job was performed on the cylinder head before the engine was reassembled with new gaskets and seals. The SPICA fuel injection was refreshed with a new pump, injectors, and actuator from Wes Ingram, while fresh hoses and cooling parts were sourced from Classic Alfa along with a new exhaust system. The tidy engine bay presents nicely with an unpolished camshaft cover, a period windshield washer fluid bag, and original decals. The engine is shown to start quickly with no undue smoke visible after sitting for brief periods. Shifting is via 5-speed manual transmission that was rebuilt in 1994, given fresh hydraulic cylinders and hoses in 2016, and deemed in good condition by the shop performing the recent engine overhaul. The refreshed drivetrain shows well from underneath with fresh paint and no evident fluid leaks. Suspension and steering were refreshed with new tie rod ends, mounts, and bushings. Brakes were overhauled with a new master cylinder and rubber hoses along with calipers rebuilt by Gold Line in Seattle gripping turned rotors with fresh pads. Original California blue license plates are retained and the car is registered through January of 2018.
