Description

This 1968 Austin Mini Cooper S is a modified left-hand drive Mk II that was refurbished 500 kilometers ago in late 2016. Described as fresh throughout, the car is sold with an additional and believed-original 1,275cc four along with a BMIHT certificate, a stack of receipts from the recent work, and a clean British Columbia title. The recent refurbishment work was carried out by Dennis Obee of Victoria, British Columbia and included stripping of all trim and repainting in a combination similar to the original Island Blue with contrasting white roof. Brightwork includes chrome fillers for dual fuel tanks, a new stud-mounted Cooper S grille, and twin bullet mirrors along with trim around sliding door glass and pop-out quarter windows. Lighting updates include Wipac headlights, taillights, and turn signal assemblies. A single license plate light is also present along with Cooper S badging front and rear. Track-inspired touches include hood pins and bolt-on Group 5 flares over 10 Minilite-style wheels. Yokohama S-compound street/competition rubber is from 2012. Inside, Cobra Classic vintage racing-style buckets were installed on custom mounts, and the new rear bench is upholstered to match. Fresh carpeting, door panels, and other trim were fitted along with a factory-style headliner. A Nardi wheel and aftermarket shifter have replaced the original items. Other additions include new inertia-reel safety belts, a Paddy Hopkirk heel-and-toe throttle pedal, and a stainless steering column drop bracket. Canadian-market cars retained mph speedometers until the change to metric instruments in the 1970s. A 130 mph speedo is seen here along with an oil pressure gauge and add-on Smiths tach. The dash is also home to a solid-topped chrome ashtray and controls for the refurbished heater. The 1,380cc Swiftune engine is built on an A+ block and crank with Omega cast pistons and an SW10 camshaft. A blueprinted oil pump supplies lubrication with a 10-row oil cooler and billet filter housing. Cooling is from a Radtec aluminum radiator, thermostat-actuated electric fan, and silicone hoses. Induction is from twin Weber 40 DCOE sidedrafts with custom linkages and AN plumbing drawing from refurbished fuel tanks. Exhaust is via a Maniflow header to custom stainless piping, while electrical upgrades include an Autosparks wiring loom and Pertronix ignition components. The remainder of the drivetrain is comprised of a Minispares remote-change 4-speed gearbox and differential with straight-cut gears, Hardy Spicer output shafts, light flywheel, and pressure plate. The believed-original 1275cc S engine is also included in a cleaned and disassembled state. Subframes and suspension components have been media blasted, powder coated, and fitted with upgrades including GAZ adjustable shocks and Minispares donuts with original adjustable trumpets. Heim-jointed tie bars, adjustable control arms, and adjustable camber brackets have also been installed. Braking is via 4-piston aluminum calipers over competition rotors up front and Super Minifin drums out back, with stainless hoses and custom fabricated hard lines throughout. The BMIHT certificate indicated the car is a Canadian export Cooper S built in November 1967 and verifies its original colors. Records are available from the recent work, which was carried out with the intention of using the car as a daily driver. A variety of original parts and spares are included along with the 1275 engine mentioned above
