It has since been further refurbished and is now powered by a Chico Performance–built 1,679cc flat-four mated to a four-speed “Freeway Flyer” manual transaxle. The fiberglass body shell has been repainted in red flake over PRP suspension seats with tan upholstery. Other modifications and features include a Manx Sidewinder exhaust, a custom GPS speedometer, Smitty’s Smoothies wheels, a custom rear bumper, a replacement windshield and frame, and a Kenwood stereo with Infinity Reference speakers. Exterior features include chrome headlight and taillight bezels, front bumper, side mirrors, and roll bar as well as “Wonder Bug” script lettering on the side sills, a fabricated rear bumper and engine cage with a receiver hitch, and a replacement windshield and frame. The black strip of fabric on the soft-top upholstery conceals a previous repair, and 3M clear film protectant has been applied to the body in various locations. Staggered-width 15? Smitty’s Smoothies wheels with polished VW hubcaps and trim rings are wrapped in 195/60 front and 235/70 rear Kumho Solus KR21 tires manufactured in 2015. The brake system was also refurbished with replacement wheel cylinders, shoes, drums, braided lines, and a master cylinder. A replacement molded carpeting kit from Tj Kustoms has been installed, and audio components include a Kenwood CD head unit, a Soundstream Picasso Nano amplifier, and four Infinity Reference speakers. The pedal cluster was powdercoated, the clutch-cable eyelet shaft was replaced with a locking shaft, the E-brake handle and cables were replaced, and a translucent red 8-ball knob sits atop a chrome EMPI shift lever. A wood-rimmed steering wheel fronts a machine-turned dashboard panel with auxiliary gauges and a custom 80-mph Speedhut GPS speedometer encompassing a 6k-rpm tachometer, a digital odometer, and “Wonderbug” lettering between the turn-signal and indicator lights.
