Description

This 1960 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint is an original black-plate California car that has been with the seller for 40 years. This is an early 101-series example finished in its original black that had extensive work completed by the prestigious Kevin Kay Restorations in 2011 detailed below including a new 5-speed transmission and new exhaust. It was sold new in September of 1960 in San Francisco, and the seller has driven it around 55k miles during his ownership. It was repainted in 1979 and given a replacement 1300cc engine from another Sprint at that same time. The car is a touch quicker than stock thanks to 1750 cams, 4.55 rear end and electronic ignition, the seller saying â??Thereâ??s been some other fiddling over the years, but no swapping out for 2 liter or such blasphemy.â?The repaint in the 1980s was a thorough job using Imron that the seller says has proven durable due in part to warm garages and rare exposure to inclement weather. The body is sound but does exhibit a quarter-sized spot of rust below the trunk (see gallery) and a small dent on the passenger side. There was rust starting to form near the battery so the entire trunk floor was professionally replaced â?? this area can be seen in the gallery as well.Chrome and trim are complete and look nice, with cool touches like the chrome airplane shaped trunk trim that was standard on 750-series cars and present on only some of these early 101 cars. 1960 was a transition year for Sprints and Spiders as Alfa Romeo phased in the new 101 series starting in mid-1959. This car sits on stock 15â?³ wheels with Vredestein Sprint Classic tires. The interior looks very clean with many original details like correct door panels that are often incorrectly reproduced on lesser examples. The original interior color was gray, and over the years the seller says that freshening over the years has included black leather seats, a new headliner, and new carpets. Gauges are clear and function properly with some mild yellowing that is typical. The oil temp gauge does not work.In 2011 the car received a major mechanical refresh and rust repair by Kevin Kay Restorations in Redding, CA. The rusty trunk floor was cut out, new stiffening ribs fabricated, new battery tray and underpanel installed and sprayed with SKS. The fuel tank was removed, flushed and cleaned inside and out, and a new sending unit was fitted. Kevin inspected the rockers at this time and did not recommend that any work was needed. The 5-speed transmission gearset was lightened by Tom Sahines and Kevin Kay fitted a new clutch and surfaced and balanced the flywheel/pressure plate. The car received a new carrier bearing to the driveshaft, new exhaust system, Solex carb rebuild, new distributor cap and wires, and new steering column seal.Engine #00102 27878 replaced the original unit when fitted in the 1980s and has around 37k miles since.
