Description
This 1988 BMW M5 is one of 1,340 examples produced for North America and was originally sold by Winslow BMW of Colorado Springs. The car was taken to California by the first owner, where it remained until 2005. After stints in Indiana and Minnesota under subsequent owners, the car returned to Colorado when purchased by me in 2011. The S38B35 inline-six has 1,000 miles on a top-end rebuild by BMW specialist Mark Hutto, and the original transmission was replaced with a Getrag G-265 5-speed manual. Now showing just over 172k miles, this example is modified with an S38B36 intake cam, M88 headers, a Turner chip, Bilstein shocks, and H&R springs. The black finish is said to be original except for the deck lid, and body panel VIN tags are shown in the gallery along with paint meter readouts. A few imperfections are noted on the front lower valence and hood, and there are a few small pits on the windshield. 16â?³ BBS wheels were recently refinished and wear newer 225/50 Dunlop Dirreza DZ102 tires.Euro grilles and headlights have been fitted, and the high beams wear removable yellow covers. The car rides on H&R springs and Bilstein Sport shocks, though the factory self-leveling suspension components and lines are included in the sale. The interior is finished in Natural leather, and the front seats have been refurbished and recovered. All other interior finishes are said to be original, and the dash remains free of cracks. An Alpine stereo replaces the factory unit, which is included in the sale. All interior components are said to function and A/C is reported to blow cold. 172,052 miles are shown on the odometer. The power-adjustable front seats are equipped with heat, and all seat-back badges are present. Flaws noted by the seller include some fading on the factory floor mats and wear on the driverâ??s door handle. Two scratches are mentioned on driver-side map pockets. The S38B35 3.5L inline-six received a top-end rebuild from BMW specialist Mark Hutto and was fitted with an indexed S38B36 intake cam, Turner Motorsports chip, and M88 headers. The bottom end was inspected and left alone on the builderâ??s recommendation. Other work included the addition of high-flow VSR catalytic converters ahead of a Billy Boat exhaust. The factory gearbox was replaced with a 3-piece Getrag G-265 unit. A used replacement A/C compressor was fitted, and various hoses and seals were replaced to address items noted in the inspection.A complete factory tool kit can be found beneath the deck lid along with a subwoofer box.
