Description

The car was then relocated to Houston, Texas, where it was refurbished with a rebuild of the 1,147cc Triumph-sourced inline-four, rust repair, fitment of several fiberglass body panels, a repaint in red, a reupholstered interior, conversion to a 12-volt electrical system, and more. The Amphicar was designed by Hans Trippel, who also designed the Mercedes-Benz Gullwingâ??s doors, and its model name referred to the vehicleâ??s theoretical 7-knot peak water speed and 70-mph maximum road speed. A white convertible top is fitted, and rust spots are described near the rear bumpers. When the car enters the water, the transmission is shifted into neutral and a lever is engaged to activate the propellers. Steering in the water is handled by the front wheels. The cabin has been upholstered in white and gray vinyl with black rubber floor mats. A single-DIN radio has been added to the dash, with speakers in the lower kick panels. Instrumentation includes a 90-mph speedometer, a combination fuel and temperature gauge, and an analog clock. The rear-mounted 1,147cc inline-four was sourced from the Triumph Herald, and drive is sent to either the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission or to the dual propellers using a separate gearbox mounted to the end of the manual transmission. .
