1983 Renault R5 Turbo 2

This 1983 Renault R5 Turbo 2 is a largely stock example with 102k kilometers. This was among a small number of gray market R5 Turbos imported to the USA by Sun International in the 1980s. It was purchased by the owner last year after spotting it on BaT, and he has driven the car a couple hundred miles and performed only basic maintenance â?? he notes that it drives well and feels good on the road. The car is fitted with an aftermarket exhaust and newer Minilite-style wheels, but the original TRX wheels are included in the sale.The previous owner had a set of Minilite wheels produced for the car by Minilite UK, which offer a wider range of tires options. They are sized 15Ã?7 with 195/45r15s up front and 16Ã?9 with 245/45r16 in the rear. The original TRX wheels are included and fitted with decent tires, though they wear older date codes. The car remains otherwise stock on the outside with Turbo script on the doors and rear window and Cibie front fog lights with covers.Some inconsistencies are noted in the paint finish, with orange peel present on some surfaces and not on others, which may be evidence of paint work. The only known paintwork is reapplied clearcoat on the roof. Note the Saint Gobain glass with Renault markings.Some paint chips are present here and there, and there is an area of bubbling below the right rear quarter window where the flare meets the bodywork.The interior is stock with comfortable seats, clean dash, and three-spoke Iso-Delta steering wheel. Both the headliner and seats were recovered about four years ago, and a section of carpet behind the seats was replaced by the previous owner about one year ago.Stock orange Jaeger gauges are in good condition and there is a Passport radar detector attached to the stock clock. The seat foam used during the reupholstering is said to be denser than the original material, and pushes up the seating position slightly.The rear hatch is occupied by the mid-mounted 1397cc turbocharged four â??Cleonâ? cylinder engine, which is paired to a 5-speed transaxle.Engine #2347 is assumed to be original to the car with a single Garrett turbocharger. The previous owner stated the car was a 185 horsepower variant with the thicker intercooler for that model, but the seller cannot confirm.The area below the forward hood is dominated by the original spare, and appears tidy and correct.Underbody surfaces show well, and while the seller notes some moisture is present on the oil pan and trans, but neither appears to be leaking or dripping.
